In one of the cooler artistic endeavors we’ve seen lately, artist Pedro Reyes has taken an assortment of weapons set to be demolished and fabricated musical instruments from them. His series is called Imagine and is a sequel of sorts to an earlier project he did, where 1527 weapons were donated, melted down and made into 1527 shovels, and 1527 trees were planted with those shovels. With this project, he and six musicians made 50 musical instruments out various firearms and, as explained in his blog, “The task was challenging but they succeeded in extracting sounds, from percussion to wind and string. It’s difficult to explain but the transformation was more than physical. It’s important to consider that many lives were taken with these weapons; as if a sort of exorcism was taking place the music expelled the demons they held, as well as being a requiem for lives lost.” Below are some of the instruments that were created as well as a video of them in action, showing that not only are the beautiful, but they can make beautiful music as well.
